On Upcoming Session/About Blood & Bubblegum

I’m heading back into Crackle & Pop studio next week with Johnny Sangster at the controls and I’ll be joined by some of my favorite folks and talented musicians, Mark Pickerel, Andy Stoller and Daniel Walker.

One of the songs we’ll be recording is one I’ve been playing for a while, Blood & Bubblegum. It’s probably one of my favorite songs to play, the tempo, the rolling chord progressions, like being on the tilt-o-whirl but in slow motion. It’s a song about dealing with depression. How sometimes you just have to let depression sit at the table with you, acknowledging it and allowing it to exist without letting it consume you.

My hope for this upcoming studio session is to get the majority of at least 4 more songs done. I’ve built a lot of the demos for these new songs in GarageBand, using them as road maps in the studio. For the first batch of songs recorded, we pulled some tracks straight from my GarageBand demos to use in the studio versions and that’s been very exciting for me. We won’t be doing as much of that this session, which will also be fun, in that there will be more collective exploration of sounds, trying to emulate and elevate ideas captured in the demos. It also means more building from the ground up, a task that is both wildly inspiring and immensely daunting.

I can’t wait to be back in the studio and sharing more with everyone!
